April 2016 Rally

Dates: April 21-24, 2016

Location: Edinburg, VA

Hosts: Gene and Judy Matthews

Campground: Creekside Campground

It can be said with certainty that the Cardinal Virginians officially opened the 2016 camping season in style. The group of 12 coaches camped at Creekside Campground in Edinburg, VA, the weekend of April 21-24, 2016. Campers dusted off their coaches and came for a fun-filled time had by all.

Attending were Gene and Judy Matthews, Karen and Janelle Lohr, Rick and Cindy Roberson, Steve and Lynn Bowers, Timm and Sharon Seaman, Paul and Carol Melton, Kamal and Deni Rojiani, Gary and Donna Leeth, Bill and Cheryl Brown, Feliza Jones, Dave and Evelyn Crabtree and the Crabtree’s guests Tim and Debbie Creaghan from Canada. This is the Creaghan’s second time camping with us, the first time in 2009 at Misty Mountain Campground in Crozet, while touring Virginia.

Gene and Bill golfed on Thursday. No one is talking about the scores. Then again on Friday, Dave, Tim, Timm and Bill golfed amid a few raindrops. This time Tim Creaghan led in the low score category. In the meantime, some folks visited wineries while others took sewing lessons from Judy. Again there was a repeat of winery visits and sewing on Saturday. I can’t say what happened on the wine tours and those that went are not talking. The sewing group - Judy, Cheryl, Evelyn and Lynn made table runners, pot holders, trivets and Cindy put new cuffs on her favorite sweatshirt.

For the Saturday evening meal, everyone brought vegetables to be added to the pots of chicken and beef soups. They simmered all day. It was enjoyed by all. After our business meeting, anniversaries and birthdays were celebrated with one of Feliza’s delicious cakes. All we can say for that is yum! We love it when Feliza bakes.

Feliza presented Gene with a beautiful red, white and blue afghan to be given to one of the veterans in hospice. For those of you who may not know, Gene volunteers with the veterans’ hospice group. Feliza asked that it be given from the Cardinal Virginians Group. Her husband was a veteran and this project holds a special place in her heart.

It was also decided that coats be collected (new or gently used) to give to the homeless veterans as our “give back” project. So check your closets and start donating. They can be given to Gene and he will see that they get to the right place.

Fun was had by all. Laughter, tall tales and fellowship was the highlight. We now declare camping season officially open. See you next month at Smith Mountain Lake.
